EuCIA is organising a LinkedIn Live event focusing on the REFRESH project in partnership with Ilkay Özkisaoglu, creator of the Composites Lounge community.

REFRESH (Smart dismantling, sorting and REcycling of glass Fibre REinforced composite from wind power Sector through Holistic approach) is an EU-funded project developing a smart, circular system enabling improved recycling of glass fibre reinforced composites derived from wind turbine decommissioning or reblading. EuCIA is leader of the REFRESH communication and dissemination activities.

REFRESH perfectly aligns with EuCIA’s initiatives to advance and demonstrate the circularity of composite materials.

The event takes place on 28th April at 11:00-12:30 CEST and features an introduction by Raphaël Pleynet, EuCIA’s Managing Director. Register to attend.

About REFRESH

Europe’s wind industry is committed to building a circular economy which reduces environmental impacts throughout a turbine’s life cycle, including the decommissioning phase. Around 90% of a wind turbine’s mass is recyclable but the blades, made of durable composite materials, present a complex challenge and recycling solutions are not yet widely available. Older wind farms are now being decommissioned and scaling up ways to manage these end-of-service blades is crucial.

REFRESH is answering this challenge by developing sustainable repurposing and recycling solutions, covering the whole value chain from end-of-life blades to new products. The REFRESH value chain encompasses:

  • a smart blade cutting solution;
  • shredding and materials sorting technologies;
  • mechanical and thermal recycling processes;
  • new microwave-assisted recycling processes;
  • thermochemical treatment of non-recyclable dusts and fines;
  • design of products using recycled materials;
  • sustainability analyses of processes and end products;
  • blockchain traceability platform and decision-making tool.

The REFRESH Project Live Talk

The LinkedIn Live session Advancing wind turbine blade circularity brings together 11 experts from across Europe, each representing a key link of the REFRESH value chain. Participants will share their role in the project, their technical contributions, and their vision for achieving circularity in composite materials.

Objectives of the Live Talk:

  • Present the mission, activities, and expected impact of the REFRESH project.
  • Introduce each partner’s contribution across dismantling, recycling, new product development, sustainability analysis, and traceability.
  • Highlight motivations of consortium members and the innovation potential for Europe’s wind industry.
  • Engage the audience through a closing ‘Call to Action’ round.
  • Offer a space for live questions and expert insights.

The panelists, and their role in REFRESH:

  • Raphaël Pleynet, EuCIA – project communication & dissemination;
  • Daniel Grisenti, RINA Consulting – project coordination;
  • Jean-Baptiste Strehaiano, ETAT9 – smart blade cutting;
  • Giorgio Betteto, Gees Recycling – mechanical recycling into structural panels;
  • Marcin Rusin, Gjenkraft AS – thermal recycling and fibre recovery;
  • Gonzalo Murillo Ciordia, CIRCE – experimental microwave-assisted pyrolysis and solvolysis;
  • Jan Kašpar, Enecolab Srl – thermochemical conversion of dust and fines;
  • Andrea Tinti, CETMA – design of new products incorporating secondary materials;
  • Anurag Bansal, ACCIONA Construction – application of recycled composites in construction;
  • Ioana Muntean, RINA Consulting – LCA of processes and products;
  • David Garcia Estevez, TECNALIA – blockchain traceability platform & decision-making algorithm.
