EuCIA has published a new article highlighting the circularity of composite materials.

Many options for end-of-use composites

Did you know that composite materials can be re-used almost infinitely through both closed and open loop processes?

A common myth is that wind turbine blades, bus panels and laptop casings are only destined for landfill. In reality, there are many technologies available for lifetime extension of composite products and materials. Eventually, when lifetime extension is no longer possible, re-use and recovery of materials, or their constituents, from composite products can also be applied to strongly reduce raw material consumption and therefore contribute to the circular European economy.

EuCIA’s latest publication, Composites are circular materials, provides an overview of existing composites recycling technologies as well as those in development. It also discusses their technology readiness levels (TRLs) and the importance of assessing the environmental impacts of the different processes using metrics such as cumulative energy demand (CED).
