EuCIA was invited to participate in the conference The cement plant: a solution to transform waste into energy and construction materials during Pollutec 2025 in Lyon.

The conference on 8th October was organised by France Ciment, which represents the country’s cement industry. The aim was to raise awareness of the role of waste recovery in cement plants in driving decarbonisation and circularity.

POLLUTEC 2 - EuCIAEuCIA’s managing director Raphaël Pleynet discussed the reprocessing of end-of life (EoL) composites in cement production. He highlighted a life cycle assessment (LCA), supported by EuCIA and eight other industry associations, which studied the environmental impacts of processing glass fibre reinforced composites waste through cement co-processing. The report reveals that each ton of EoL composites waste treated in a cement facility saves up to 1 ton of CO2 compared to traditional waste incineration methods.

“By carrying out an LCA of co-processing we were able to demonstrate to the European Commission that composite materials are indeed recycled and recovered in cement plants,” he explained. “The mineral fillers and glass fibre that make up these materials are integrated into the composition of the clinker, here there is recycling, and the resin is used for energy as fuel in the furnaces.”

Hosted by France Ciment, the conference also featured speakers from Ecomaison and ENèreGY.
