Professor Roberto Frassine discusses building a stronger composites ecosystem in Europe with Yannick Willemin in a new episode of The Composites Catalyst.

The conversation runs from university research to startups, why traditional venture capital can struggle with the timelines of advanced materials, and the role of Italy’s composites ecosystem.

Moving on to consider the European perspective, Roberto explains how EuCIA, as an ‘association of associations,’ is influencing European regulation, including the new End-of-Life Vehicles regulation.

“The two main pillars of our activities are communication on what composite materials can do and what are the advantages of using composite materials,” he says. “And the second one is advocacy, so trying to provide the European Commission with all the information they need to start producing regulations in a better way.”

“A third one, which will probably be more important in the future, is standardisation. Because there is a very strong need of good standards in composite materials, especially for products.”

The interview concludes with a look at why collaboration is becoming increasingly important for the industry, the role of the European Circular Composites Alliance (ECCA), and what it will take to build viable circular value chains for composites in Europe.
