EuCIA is excited to announce the publication of the 2024 edition of the Composites Sustainability Report, a special issue of JEC Composites Magazine.

The Composites Sustainability Report aims to present the latest trends, technologies and strategies driving composites circularity and sustainability in Europe, North America, and Asia. For this year’s publication, EuCIA partnered with JEC and with our members and partners to source articles highlighting some of the many European initiatives focused on advancing sustainable design, life cycle assessment, and lifetime extension and recycling technologies for composites.

“This Sustainability Report, the latest in a series developed in a partnership between JEC and EuCIA, was born out of the need to witness the composites industry’s commitment to addressing and resolving the complex interconnections between environmental protection and the economy in our globalised society,” states EuCIA’s President, Professor Roberto Frassine, in the introduction Continuing the journey towards composites circularity. “Together, we will take a journey of exploration, from the fundamental concepts of sustainability and circularity of composite products, through the main technological innovations on the world market, to examples of practical applications.”

New, exclusive interviews

This year’s report starts with four interviews where key stakeholders share their views on composites circularity:

  • The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation supports the shift to a circular economy – Vincent Basuyau, Policy Officer – Energy-intensive Industries & Raw Materials at the European Commission’s DG GROW.
  • Advancing a sustainable boating industry – Philip Easthill, Secretary General, EBI.
  • Unlocking the full potential of blade recycling – Alexander Vandenberghe, Head of Innovation at WindEurope.
  • Cement co-processing of end-of-life composite materials: a win-win solution – Nikos Nikolakakos, Environment and Resources Manager, CEMBUREAU.

We thank the European Commission and our partners EBI, WindEurope and CEMBUREAU for accepting our invitation to contribute to this publication.

Moving towards a circular economy

Circularity is gaining increasing attention in Europe in the context of the European Green Deal. The 20 articles making up the European section of the Composites Sustainability Report illustrate the breadth of research and industry activity taking place around this topic. The organisations featured discuss topics ranging from digital product passports, life cycle assessment tools and eco-design concepts, to projects to advance reuse and recycling strategies for composites and find markets for recycled materials.

We thank EuCIA members Assocompositi, Composites Germany, Composites UK, European Pultrusion Technology Association (EPTA), Finnish Plastics Industries Federation (FIPIF), Norwegian Circular Materials Technology (NCMT), Polyvia and TECH-FAB Europe, and their members, for their support.

We also thank our international partners for sharing key sustainability initiatives taking place in their regions.
