How much do you know about EuCIA’s Eco Impact Calculator? A new interview with EuCIA’s president, Professor Roberto Frassine, explains how it works and its role in supporting sustainable design.

An easy-to-use LCA tool

EuCIA’s Eco Impact Calculator allows users in the composites industry to calculate a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) or eco-footprint of a product or set of materials. Whether you are in production, R&D or sustainability, the tool enables fast assessment of a product’s environmental impact from raw materials through to the finished part.

The calculator is specifically designed for ease of use, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises without in-house LCA specialists. It can also be used by students, consultants and large-scale OEMs. Traditional LCA tools can be costly and complex, but this platform simplifies the process by reducing the amount of input data needed compared to traditional LCA tools.

Sustainable design decisions

The Eco Impact Calculator presents results via a user-friendly interface and downloadable Eco Report. These reports help guide sustainable design decisions, supporting composite part users in understanding the environmental performance of purchased parts and helping procurement choices.

The calculator is regularly updated to incorporate new materials, processes and life cycle datasets.

Professor Roberto Frassine: “By making reliable environmental assessments more accessible, the tool helps composite part manufacturers adopt more sustainable practices from the earliest stages of design.”
