The European Alliance for SMC BMC announced the winners of the 5th edition of the SMC BMC Design Award at JEC World 2026.

The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Live Better, Live Green’ and Lucía Bonmatí and Bernat Rucabado from Elisava in Barcelona, Spain, received the Gold Award for their Hedera design.
Hedera is a lightweight, modular, and industrially scalable vertical garden system that transforms building facades into a long-lasting green infrastructure. The awards jury thought it was a great concept, very well documented and with a clear rationale. They also liked its marketability, final shape, and aesthetics.

Lucía Bonmatí and Bernat Rucabado present the Hedera design.
“We believe this application can be manufactured in SMC and has the potential to become commercial,” commented Joan Montobbio, chair of the jury. “We very much liked the detail of the design, including the design philosophy and drivers.”
SMC and BMC composite materials are ideal for making lightweight and intricate parts that combine structural performance and durability with a smooth surface finish. They are increasingly used in a broad range of end-use applications and markets.
